Fridays at FIGAT7TH

Back by popular demand, the FIGat7th Downtown Festival will reignite the city this summer with eclectic sounds and tunes. Presented by Arts Brookfield, the festival kicks off Friday, August 4 and will run for 4 consecutive weeks every Friday at Downtown LA’s premier shopping destination, FIGat7th. The outdoor plaza will be transformed into an intimate concert venue with performances by leading pop, rock, American roots, soul and alternative artists.

Kicking off the festival is Los Angeles’ hit funk-dance duo, Tuxedo, comprised of singer Mayer Hawthorne and producer Jake One. Hot on the heels of Tuxedo is the raunch ‘n’ roll singer-songwriter Hanni El Khatib on August 11. The NY-based band Sinkane follows on August 18, introducing a cocktail of progressive funk rock and Sudanese pop. The festival closes out with another LA music staple, Quetzal, who peppers their fiery mix of Mexican musica ranchera and salsa with socially conscious Chicano rock and R&B.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive at 4:00 p.m. for a DJ Happy Hour with NONA ENTERTAINMENT in the TASTE Food Hall Courtyard where a variety of excellent eateries and chef-driven concepts are offered. The festivities will move upstairs at 7:00 p.m. for more fun beats as local DJs warm up the crowd before the talented, internationally recognized headliners take the stage.

FIGat7th Downtown Festival’s unique lineup reflects the vibrant diversity of the city and the cultural and creative center that downtown LA has become!

Past festivals have featured The Internet, Anderson .Paak, KING, Superhumanoids, Soulection, Jose James, and The Belle Brigade. The FIGat7th Downtown Festival is free and open to the public as part of Arts Brookfield’s continued effort to bring Brookfield’s public spaces to life through visual and performing arts.

TUXEDO with DJ Showtime of KDAY on August 4th

“The only time you wear a Tuxedo is when it’s time to party,” says legendary West Coast player, Snoop Dogg, on the opening track of ‘Tuxedo II,’ the second album by American singer, Mayer Hawthorne and record producer, Jake One. Together, the duo has yielded a bevy of absolute slappers that are packaged perfectly with positivity for dance parties in 2017. Their ‘Tuxedo II’ album does not fall short of this as a modern testament to unity and alacrity in trying times. The transcendental ritual of the party and the rippling self-affirmation of the funk are of one spirit: the spirit of self-love — of self-expression. It is a reminder that the dance floor will always be there to welcome you, whoever you are.

HANNI EL KHATIB with Chulita Vinyl Club on August 11th

The first idea for singer-songwriter, Hanni El Khatib’s, Savage Times project was to do something he’d never done before. Instead, he ended up doing… well, everything he’d never done before. What began as an experiment to create something raw in real time — recording and releasing songs (and even videos) direct to the public as soon as tape stopped rolling — became a rapidly successful experience for the co-owner of the Los Angeles-based independent record label, Innovative Leisure. In fact, 21 best-of-the-sessions songs came from this experiment. Savage Times touches everything from garage rock to punk to disco, hip-hop and even some unexpected solo-guitar self- portraiture. It’s exciting live performances are not to be missed.

SINKANE with Raul Campos of KCRW on August 18th

Sinkane, or Ahmed Gallab, is a British musician who blends krautrock, progressive rock, electronica, free jazz, and funk rock with Sudanese pop. Every note of Sinkane’s music comes straight out of a generosity of spirit. Never has that spirit been on more vivid display than on the uplifting new album Life & Livin’ It. This is feel-good music for trying times, celebrating what makes life good without ignoring what makes it hard. “That carefree, light and fun feeling I was getting while writing this record is what I want everyone to feel when they listen to it,” says Gallab. True to its name, Life & Livin’ It is an album about all kinds of experiences. It’s vigorously playing on the stereo and you’re invited to listen.

QUETZAL with Mark Torres of KPFK on August 25th

Having created a path that has earned them the LA Times title of “one of Los Angeles’ most important bands,” Quetzal forges a sound that will simultaneously make you dance and contemplate change; a sound as rich and complex as their pluri-ethnic barrio experience. Their unique combination of community activism and creative compositions has allowed them to travel the world using music as a tool for creating a global network of musicians committed to building community.
